WATCH: 12-year-old Jillian McCue’s two new goats arrived today to her delight, but it took years of fighting for change to make it happen. Monica Martinez reports.

Wearing her “I love goats” t-shirt and hat, Jillian McCue is finally getting what she has fought so hard for.

Her two new pets arrived Saturday morning – miniature goats Gaby and baby.

Led in on leashes, the goats got a first look at their new home in Saanich, and the self proclaimed “goat girl” is seeing her dream walking around in her backyard.

“Goats are a diamond in the rough, there are so many great things about them that not many people know,” she said.

The 12-year-old first fell in love with miniature goats on a trip to California, but back at home she found they weren’t allowed in urban backyards.

And so she began a campaign to change the bylaw, sending a petition to council and even presenting her case in person.

“We’ve been impressed with her willingness to do whatever it takes to get them,” said Jillian’s grandmother Katie McCue.

In April, she was thrilled to get the green light from council.

“Doing this I think people will find out how amazing and pretty and lovable they are,” she said joyfully.

Jillian is ready for the furry snuggles but her dad, Rich McCue, said she has also spent months learning how to care for her new pets.

“She’s very excited so hopefully that will carry on and she’ll be able to be a good ambassador and good keeper of the goats in Saanich,” he said.

Hobby farmer Joe Sentes said the goats have a genetic condition making them the perfect pets.

“Their whole nature is very sweet and quiet and it’s perfect for what Jillian is doing. They also don’t vocalize as much,” Sentes said.

Out for a walk in the neighbourhood, the dog isn’t the only one slightly confused.

“I love it when cars go by. They’re like is it a dog is it a goat what is happening,” said Jillian.

And like any proud parent, it’s time to show off the cute additions to the family, introducing them to neighbours and bringing them by the local coffee shop.

At a young age, the Saanich goat ambassador learned to fight for change and now gets to reap all its cuddly rewards.
