School districts across B.C. have until the end of the year to update their anti-bullying policies to include explicit references to sexual orientation and gender identity.

Education Minister Mike Bernier made the announcement in Vancouver Thursday and became emotional while saying he wished the changes had been in place when his daughter was in school.

Glen Hansman, president of the B.C. Teachers’ Federation, says the new requirements mean schools must support any student who chooses to reveal their sexual orientation.

Hansman said when he was growing up as a queer youth in Ontario, it wasn’t safe to come out, and he approves of the change.
