WATCH: As a little girl of six years old, Sharon Pedersen made headlines for receiving a treasured memento belonging to Queen Elizabeth. Monica Martinez has the story.
Sharon Pedersen has been quietly following the royal family since she was a little girl, collecting newspaper clippings and photographs of them after learning prince and princesses exist outside fairy tales.
“I thought the prince was very, very handsome. Of course, every young girl dreams of her prince charming one day,” she said.
When then Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip visited Victoria in 1951, she was only six years old, but it’s a royal visit she’ll always remember.
Her aunt was working at the Empress hair salon, where the royal couple were staying, and helped do Queen Elizabeth’s hair, and that’s when she got a reigning memento.
“They looked at the brush and there was still hair in it and so that is what is here in the scrapbook,” said Pedersen.
Newspapers picked up the story.
“Ms. Steinmark is the one who did her hair and Ms. Steinmark said ‘the royal hair is a glowing chestnut colour with lots of body,'” she read from the 1951 article.
Pedersen took it to school to show classmates just like her children did, and now her grandchildren.
“Most young girls are fascinated by princes and princess and here we have Will and Kate coming and they must be pretty fascinated by them too so I thought I would share that story.”
The scrapbook spends most of its time in the closet but Saturday’s royal visit gives Pedersen a chance to go down memory lane.
“I have enjoyed watching Elizabeth as queen and she’s done an amazing job in my opinion.”
It’s only a circlet of hair and book of photos but it’s left a life long royal impression.
