Horse carriages in Victoria have been a controversial subject and animal activists wants to them removed calling the practice “animal exploitation.”

Thursday night members of the Victoria Horse Alliance appeared before city council to ask them to phase out the industry by 2017.

There was a peaceful demonstration before the council meeting began.

At the meeting, activists recommended to council an amendment to the motor vehicle for hire bylaw  to ban the horse drawn carriages.

They say there is evidence of animal cruelty pertaining to the horses’ hooves and how they are cared for and they are worried about the safety of the animals as they walk on city streets.

More than 900 people have signed the group’s petition.

The two horse carriage companies operating in Victoria issued a joint statement disputing the group’s claims that Victoria had seen over 20 carriage-related collisions and safety concerns over the past 20 years.
