There has been a huge baby boom in the southern resident population in recent years, with nine orcas being born since December 2014, but now experts say it’s not all good news.
The Centre for Whale Research has now confirmed another calf in the JPod, J54, is male thanks to recent photos taken by local naturalists.
Researchers now say they’re concerned the recent baby boom isn’t an indication of a recovery of the southern resident population.
Of the eight remaining calves, only one is known to be a female.
