WATCH: Crown Counsel has decided not to approve the charges, stating there isn’t sufficient evidence and no substantial likelihood of conviction.
The accused was arrested in February and released with a promise to appear in court Thursday, but the appearance did not proceed as the charges were not approved.
The sexual assaults allegedly occurred at the beginning of the school year and took place on or around the University of Victoria campus.
Four women came forward to Saanich Police in February claiming they had been sexually assaulted by a student they knew well.
Officers arrested the male suspect, recommending five charges of sexual assault.
The University of Victoria then put restrictions on his on-campus movements.
In alleged sexual assault cases, the crown must be able to prove sexual contact beyond a reasonable doubt as well as an absence of consent.
In this case, prosecutors concluded there was not enough evidence to meet their standard for approving a charge, and was unlikely to result in a conviction.
