WATCH: Bear Mountain will announce Friday that it is set to host the PGA Champions Tour in September. Monica Martinez reports.
It’s the most expensive golf course in Canada and the home of Golf Canada and now Bear Mountain will also be a stop on the PGA Champions Tour.
Golfing legends over 50 years old will compete here in September – giving aspiring pros and avid golfers a chance to see them play first hand.
“It’s going to be pretty cool. I mean there are tonnes of big names we watched growing up forever so it will be cool watching them all out here,” said Darren Day.
“I enjoy watching those guys. Those guys were mentors to everybody and they mentor the PGA tour and they’ve won so it’s kind of nice to watch guys like that,” said Garrett Kucher.
The prestigious tournament was scheduled to take place September 23rd to the 25th in China, but after chemical explosions in the region last year, the Champions Tour had to find a new host.
Bear Mountain can’t officially comment until the PGA Tour’s media release goes out and that is expected to happen Friday.
The tournament prize is worth $2.5-million, making it the richest golf event for Greater Victoria.
The West Shore Chamber of Commerce says it’s great for businesses in the area which often don’t reap the rewards of Victoria based events.
“It definitely helps put us on the map and so to me that is a great sign of the incredible growth and impact our community has. People are looking to the West Shore in ways they’ve never had before and so that is a good news and I think will only continue,” said West Shore Chamber of Commerce Manager Joshua Schmidt.
It’s a big get for the West Shore and for Bear Mountain, which will get to showcase its spectacular course to the world this fall.
