WATCH: The Royal family visit isn’t the only massive event in Victoria this weekend, the PGA Tour Champions is expected to attract tens of thousands of golf spectators to Bear Mountain and millions of viewers.
Millions of eyes will be on Victoria this weekend watching Will and Kate’s every move, but on Bear Mountain, another major event will be on display to golf lovers around the world.
“We are so excited, we couldn’t be happier with the profile of this event, having the Champions tour here is almost beyond belief,” said David Clarke, Chief Financial Officer of Ecoasis, owner of Bear Mountain development.
The PGA Tour Champions is expected to draw about 25,000 people to the course and millions of viewers in 84 countries.
“There is no question that this tournament is by far the biggest tournament that will ever have happened on Vancouver Island. It will be broadcasted on the golf channel world wide,” he said.
The two events will give Greater Victoria massive exposure as a destination, publicity Tourism Victoria hopes to capitalize on.
“I think Tourism Victoria gets enough of the destination on a quick trip to want to come back again and explore more of the region and know there are so many great reasons to come to Victoria,” said Bill Lewis, Chair of the Tourism Victoria board.
“Hopefully, we give them enough of a taste that we’ll see them again next spring or next year.”
On top of an already action packed weekend, three cruise ships on Saturday will pour more than 5,000 people into the downtown core.
“It’s going to be a very busy weekend in Victoria for sure, just hard to find a hotel room this weekend,” Lewis said.
With all eyes on Victoria, the tourism industry hopes this weekend will tee off another blockbuster year.
