The Capital Regional District met to talk wastewater treatment again on Wednesday.

The gathering was made a little brighter by Tuesday’s federal budget.

The region’s preferred option will see one plant built under a park at Clover Point and at Equimalt’s McLoughlin Point.

The estimated cost of the project is now more than $1-billion and Victoria’s mayor is looking to Ottawa for lots of help footing the bill.

“In terms of waste water treatment, it is obviously a priority for this government. I was personally happy to see it rolled into the ministry of infrastructure and municipalities, so all our funding is in one place. There seems to be commitment to keep the funding and project moving forward,” said Mayor Lisa Helps.

The deadline for the CRD to apply for federal funding for the project by the end of the month is fast approaching

The Liberal government is pledging to cover up to half the cost of infrastructure projects, up from one third, and committing nearly $12-billion over five years for modernization and upgrades.
