WATCH: Police are investigating what they say could be a criminal offence. And as Monica Martinez reports, this is just one of several wire incidents over the past several years.
A motorcyclist and his passenger were cruising down a quiet street in Central Saanich when they felt a sting on their arms and legs.
Central Saanich Cpl. Dan Cottingham said a thick wire had been strung across Thomson Place, in the 8200-block.
“The wire had cut right through the jacket of the female in the back just leaving a minor cut and also a minor cut to the driver’s leg,” he said.
The intention was to cause harm and it could have led to more serious injuries had the couple been a bicycle and had they been travelling at a faster speed.
“Fortunately they were going at a fairly low rate of speed which probably helped but extremely dangerous,” Cottingham said.
Luckily, the injuries were minor, and the couple didn’t need any medical attention.
Central Saanich Mayor Ryan Windsor calls it a heinous act of cruelty.
“I think it’s a disgusting act by a person who obviously is not concerned at all with the danger they are posing to the members of the public who go up and down that road,” he said.
Unfortunately, this is one of several wire incidents over the past few years.
The most recent was in March on a popular mountain biking trail near Barsby Lake. A woman found a wire strung across the trail and stakes spiked in the ground. Luckily, no one was hurt.
But two cyclists weren’t so lucky.
Two years ago, a Victoria cyclist hit electrical tape, shattering his jaw and hurting his spine.
Months earlier, a cyclist rode into a heavy wire at Durrance Lake, hurting his neck and arm. Fortunately he had slowed down before hitting it, causing only minor injuries.
Police say stringing wire up could be considered a criminal offence and are asking anyone with information to come forward.
You can contact them at 250-652-4441 or through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
