WATCH: Tragically Hip tickets went on sale Friday morning for their last cross-country tour. It only took minutes for the show to completely sell out, exciting and frustrating die hard fans. Monica Martinez reports.
Gone are the days of camping out for concert tickets. These days the luck of the draw determines your place in line.
It’s a bittersweet tour, a fan’s last chance to see the iconic Canadian band, tickets going on sale days after news broke of frontman Gord Downie’s terminal brain cancer.
It’s a show huge Hip fans don’t want to miss.
John Garside first saw the Hip play in 1993. He’s seen them live seven times, but he’s far back, and his chances aren’t looking good.
“I’m covering all the bases. I’ve got one person on the phone at home and two friends on the computer,” he said.
At 10 a.m., the windows open and dreams are made.
Guy Rae is the first in line and snags four tickets in the front row.
“I”m feeling great. I can’t complain. It’s their last tour, I’m going to love it,” he said.
But several minutes later, dreams are also broken, as all tickets get snapped up not just in Victoria, but across the country.
“It’s very frustrating. I’m a true fan and now I’m going to have to pay $1400 for a ticket,” said Paul Lancaster.
John Garside was also left out. He was the last person to leave, sitting in disbelief.
“I’m kind of hoping I’m not going to cry today. I’m actually serious about that,” he said.
The CBC said it hopes to broadcast the last show in Kingston live, a chance for everyone to watch a musician’s last gift to his long-time fans.
