WATCH: The toddler was found dead last September but police only arrested the Victoria woman yesterday. Monica Martinez has the latest.
Behind these closed doors, few knew what happened back in September, but Victoria Police have now charged a mother with first degree murder of her 18-month old daughter.
“On Sept 16, in 2015 just before 6 am we attended a residence in Victoria to check on welfare of somebody residing in that residence. Upon arrival located an 18-month-old girl despite resuscitation efforts, she succumbed to her injuries,” said Victoria Police Cst. Matt Rutherford.
Police not only found the child dead, but the mother was critically injured and had to be rushed to hospital.
Kaela Janine Mehl had been living in the basement suite of a home on the 12-hundred block of Vista Heights in the High Quadra neighbourhood.
People in the neighbourhood are saddened by the news.
“It’s so, so sad because there are a lot of people that are going to be affected, family and friends and the neighbourhood,” said Shiping Dong.
“Not only did she lose a baby but it’s a huge part of her and her life now is just shattered and that is extremely sad, so I really feel for her,” said Monique Cartesan.
Vista Heights is a short street, with just a few blocks.
Neighbours who live here say it is a tight knit community where everyone knows each other.
They say the family had only moved to the home last year and they didn’t know them very well.
Investigators don’t think anyone else was in the home when the incident occurred.
Police were able to question the Kaela Mehl once she recovered from her injuries.
She is set to appear in court next month.
