Victorians celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday at Government House

WATCH: Hundreds of people sip tea and wish the Queen a happy birthday at Government House. Monica Martinez reports.

In high British fashion, Victorians turn up to pay tribute to the Queen on her 90th birthday.

“I think it’s marvelous and I’m very proud of the Queen and I think she’s done an outstanding job,” said Susan Elring-Tyrell.

At Government House, hundreds of people sip tea in honour of Britain’s longest reigning monarch.

“She has endured for all those years, particularly being a little girl brought up not to be the queen,” said Faith Magwood.

There are monarchists and loyalists.

“Canada was founded as a monarchy, has always been a monarchy, it’s part of who we are,” said Bruce Hallsor, past chairman of the Monarchist League of Victoria.

“lt was the loyalty to the British that brought us to Canada, otherwise my family would have probably stayed in the states,” said Maralynn Wilkinson.

But there are high school students too, and for them, this is all very new.

“It really connects youth with the past and it’s really important for us to know our history,” said Jenna Jiang, a high school student at Mount Doug.

In Windsor, crowds line the streets for a chance to deliver flowers as Her Majesty, walks with her husband by her side.

The Queen goes on to meet other 90-year-olds and share some birthday cake.

Back at this humble Canadian castle, a happy birthday song follows First Nations tradition.

A toast to one incredible milestone and wishing for many more.
