They are the iconic, quintessential Canadian band, whose lyrics and music have captured the Canadian existence.
After 13 studio albums, not even a terminal cancer diagnosis will sideline the Tragically Hip’s front man Gord Downie.
“Gord has a primary brain tumor. This is one that started from within the brain itself,” said neurologist Dr. James Perry.
His cancer, glioblastoma, is aggressive and incurable, but after 30 rounds of radiation, the tumor has shrunk.
“Gord is now continuing with ongoing chemotherapy in the form of maintenance chemotherapy and the last several weeks has rallied tremendously,” said Perry.
Downie will still be able to sing and tour. The Hip’s latest album comes out next month and the band hits the road again this summer.
Atomique Productions’ Nick Blasko has booked several local gigs for the band, the most memorable being the first Rock the Shores concert in 2012.
Lightning caused the show to shut down for an hour, but before the hip took the stage Blasko remembers huddling in the back with the band trying to decide what to do next.
“And it was really Gord who said hold on a sec, we are not leaving without playing a gig. Those people came to see us and we are going to let this lightning pass and we are going to play this gig. And those were the words that we needed to hear,” said Blasko.
They went on to to play a long set, the music and lightning together made it a show people will always remember.
